Curriculum

Curriculum Intent – whole school

John O’ Gaunt is a small school with big ambition where we believe in the relentless pursuit of
excellence. We have a knowledge-rich and skills-based curriculum that offers academic as well as
vocational breadth and rigour. We believe in creating a demanding learning environment centred
around powerful ideas, concepts and conversations supporting a ‘high challenge but low threat’
approach. At all stages, our students are given opportunities to develop a growth mindset and
resilience as well as recall and apply what they have learned, skilfully and confidently. We promote
Literacy and Numeracy in all that we do, empowering students to become ambitious for
themselves and to embrace a love of learning. Our students deserve the very best opportunities
so that they can understand the rapidly changing society in which they live and to which they need
to contribute happily and successfully, whatever their interests or starting point.

We will also ensure that we have equity for ALL students and deliver:

  • SMSC throughout what we do
  • A comprehensive and coherent PSHE programme
  • British values throughout what we do and through assemblies and our tutorial
    programme
  • AIG through a coherent careers’ programme at KS3 and 4 to ensure that our students
are ready for the next stage of their education
  • Skills for life in all that we do, to enable our students to become the best version of
    themselves

We have also agreed:

  • To engage students with our curriculum discussions (see student pledge)
  • To engage with a group of parents to ensure that they understand and support our Curriculum Intent
