Sociology

At AS Level students will complete 2 exam papers as follows:

Paper 1 will include topics such as culture and identity and will link to postmodernism and society today. It will also include a study of different social groups and the influences on them particularly from a perspective of gender, social class and ethnicity. This will also consider additional influences such as school, religion and peers on our behaviour. This unit will then be completed by a research project which will take into account the different methods used to gather information into a format that will perhaps address a particular problem.

Paper 2 is a complete unit of study on families and their varied influences and roles. Key features of this will include noting how family structures have changed and how this now has an impact on the rest of society. This will also include reference to trends in marriage, divorce and the single parent issue.

At A2 Level students will again complete 2 exam papers as follows:

Paper 1 will begin with a study of the impact of the media on society. This will include a study of who owns media corporations and whether they can have undue influence. We shall also be looking at how TV news programmes are composed and whether politics plays any part. This will then link into how the media portrays certain groups and whether society’s opinions of groups can be influenced.

Paper 2 will bring things to a conclusion with a study of social inequality. This will look at differences in society which might exist through their links with age, class, gender and ethnicity. This will be developing further and deeper to those same issues which were previously a feature of the first AS paper.
